recently been talking about domain names with clients, sometimes its hard to get a 'decent' website name that ticks all the right boxes of easy to remember (the radio test), relevant, contain one or more important keywords to your site (SEO optimised) and does contain a trademark.

You will find that nearly all one and two word domains are taken or have been bought and are for sale, even two word hyphenated domains are hard to get nowdays but more commonly we are buying two word hypenated website domain names for our clients that contain the geographical location of their business.

google / yahoo have hinted that their is some seo value in having your target keywords in your domain name so if you are in yahoo and search for web designer essex you will see that we are the first choice (we believe that yahoo give more weighting in their search algorithm for domain name keywords)

so we will continue to use 2 and 3 word essex or area related hypenated domain names as it seems to meet all the criteria and in the light of the fact that 'all the best ones are gone' we can only continue to do this as we dont believe in spending money on domain names, as its a cost a new business doesnt need before making any money, thats said at the right price some domain names would be attractive (especially if they have a static rank / page rank associated with them and they are > 2years old)

Was recently contacted by a Yahoo sales person about advertising and ended up amazed at his lack of search engine knowledge and had to correct his facts, and vocabulary regarding search engines.

In particular he kept telling me that yahoo has the majority of the business enquiry search engine traffic regarding the local business traffic, he quoted Yahoo having 16% market share where recently I had been reading that their market share was at an all time low as shown in the figures reported last month by hitwise.

After further work on www.indepth-instruction.com we were happy to see that the search term

All of a sudden we have a large amount of enquires and tender / quote requests and some of the projects are pretty exciting, one in particular (a local school) wants us to manage their website after development and help train the staff which is something I would like to get into.

MSN messenger virus

Just signed on this morning to receive an MSN Messenger message sent from a client telling me to 'check out these awesome pics from the awesome party' and giving a URL with my name in it and ending in bobyup.

This is obviously a virus but havent seen any like this for a while and its particulary worrying as I know she has hundreds of contacts on her MSN and they are mainly kids and teens as she runs lots of dance schools, thats how I know her as I done her website.

I can imagine hundreds of people clicking on this link right now and infecting their own PC, the most I can do is tell my friend about this and tell her to update then run her virus checkers.

So annoying especially for all the hundreds that are now being infected ! virus writers are the lowest of the low.

Just taken delivery of the new Adobe projects Dreamweaver CS4 and Photoshop CS4 as well as being very expensive they are quite vast products with lots of new features, quite excited about some of the new functionality in Dreamweaver CS4 as it now allows Content Management which gives more freedom to clients in being able to update their own sites.

A pretty simple one page site that jumps from section to section using javascript, also has a nice javascript 'shadowbox' (similar to lightbox) gallery of recent work.

Note to myself to chase client to get some images supplied as the site currently contains an ex-girlfriend's pictures !

The site has a strong bias towards converting visitors towards contacting the business owner as well as delivering as much information as possible in a clear and concise manner.

Good SEO planning throughout the development of this site will hopefully give it a high position in Gooogle / MSN / Yahoo (SERPS) for natural organic searches as the site is quite comprehensive and its not such a competitive area.
